Smoke alarm legislation originally due on 23 March 2020 in NSW was postponed due to COVID to the 23rd September, 2020. Landlords responsibilities have increased with relation to smoke alarms in rental properties. Tenants will also have greater power, able to organise smoke alarm repairs or replacement, reimbursable by the landlord if the landlord fails to replace a smoke alarm in the prescribed time. A penalty will apply for landlords who fail to comply.
